Ham Bagby | Ham Bagby was born in 1978, the youngest child of an Episcopal priest and a loving mother. He’s a pretty tall guy. It’s literally the first thing everyone and anyone says to him. Ham has been a janitor twice, worked in food service, stocked shelves, and done maintenance. He started playing music at 13 because he wanted to play when he was six, but that was when he got his first guitar. Ham Bagby lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for almost twenty years where he crafted his show’s mix of humor, southern flair, and attempted virtuosity.
His Influences include Jimi Hendrix, Willie Nelson, and Prince—obviously— Roger Miller, Weird Al, Thin Lizzy, Waylon Jennings, and Tuscaloosa’s own The Dexateens. As a solo artist, Ham fronts Ham Bagby and the Siege, but has always been a willing gun slinger for other bands, like Blaine Duncan and the Lookers, The Ne’er-do-Well’s, and Motel Ice Machine. More casually, he has played on recordings by Cy Simonton and Knympho Knife. There are two Ham Bagby albums available to purchase now, or stream if you’re under the age of 27, called Ham Bagby: Shits Crucial is Track 7 and Ham Bagby: Tryin Not To Die.
“I wrote it in 2000, and covid would have screwed me out of a 20th anniversary celebration of Sh!ts Crucial anyway. So we’ll have a 21st birthday party instead! “Sh!ts Crucial” can drink now! “Sh!ts Crucial” still can’t rent a car… But “Sh!ts Crucial” can stay on its parents insurance!” – Ham Bagby on “Sh!t’s Crucial” turning 21.
“I’m just looking forward to more shows. People are listening to my last record, “Trying Not To Die”, and that’s been great to see. Getting to play those songs live a couple of times post covid has been a blast, and getting to play some older stuff along with those songs has been refreshing too. I think the more new stuff I write and add to my shows, the more fun songs like “Sh!ts Crucial” and “D!ck When I Drink” become. I’m also really ready to get started on another record. The last project was so satisfying.” – Ham Bagby on what’s to come in 2021.
“In November of 2020, Ham Bagby released his debut record ‘Trying Not to Die’ as a defiant act against those who may have considered murdering him. In 10 songs, Ham expertly navigated the pros and cons of breathing, drinking, and being alive in general. While his opinion has been controversial to some, it has nevertheless kept him alive since its release and Ham has been eagerly working on his follow up ‘Trying Not Two Die,’ which will be released the next time he truly fears for his life.” – CJ Griffith.
